Etched Glass

We’ve supplied homes in Wisconsin with bespoke etched glass since we were first established in 1994. We create all of our glass to order so we can create glass to suit your home perfectly.

What designs do we offer?

Our etched glass gallery contains a wide range of designs, everything from traditional Victorian etched designs to house names and numbers. Our iconic Shadows of Nature collection is a popular choice among our Wisconsin clients. This series seeks to capture the beauty of our natural world in etched glass. We also have a series of designs inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright, renowned designers with distinct artistic styles. These are just a few highlights from our gallery, so if you’re looking to order etched glass for your Wisconsin home but haven’t found the right design yet, we’re sure to have what you’re looking for.

If you’ve found a design you like elsewhere, we may be able to create a custom etched panel based on your own imagery. To save yourself time, before looking for artwork to send us, read our guide to help you understand what types of imagery are suitable for etching as we have minimum quality and format requirements.

How to order from us?

If you have a door that requires rectangular glass (4 right angled corners), you can order through our website. Let us know your design choice, your glass sizes and if applicable, a description of your irregular glass shape (curved top, slanted top, circular etc). We’ll then respond with a quote – usually within a couple of working days. Proofing process

After your order has been placed, we’ll create a proof to show how the design(s) you’ve chosen will look in your custom glass sizes. This gives you the peace of mind that the glass you receive on delivery day will be exactly as expected. It also gives you the opportunity to make alterations to the design if necessary before production begins. You can expect to receive the proof through email within 5 working days of placing your order.

After you’ve reviewed your proof, if anything needs amending just let us know. This may be resizing elements or changing a font etc. We’ll happily re-draft the proof until you are 100% happy with it, only then will we begin production on your glass.

In most cases when we supply glass to Wisconsin (and indeed across the USA) we offer free shipping. If you want glass with a bit of color, we can also supply fused glass to Wisconsin.

About Etched Glass

The earliest examples of etched glass in history can be traced back to the 15th century, this makes it one of the oldest forms of decorative glass. Over the years, the etched glass production process has evolved encouraging creativity to flourish and enabling glass artists to achieve never before seen levels of detail. Today, glass is often etched through sandblasting or using acid. Sandblasting consists of firing an abrasive substance at high pressure across glass to etch a design.

About Etched Glass

The earliest examples of etched glass historically can be traced back to the 15th century, this makes it one of the oldest forms of decorative glass.

How do we etch glass?

We create our etched glass using the abrasive-blasting method, also known as sandblasting. We’ve chosen this method of production for a variety of reasons:

  • It ensures our etched glass finish is consistent, permanent and of the highest quality.
  • It enables us to offer a wide variety of highly detailed designs and even completely bespoke designs to our clients.
  • It allows more light to transmit through to the home than alternatives like acid etched glass.
  • It avoids the health and safety issues associated with using hazardous acid to etch glass.

Our Process

We start by creating a protective mask which contains a version of your chosen design modified to suit your glass sizes. We then fit this to a toughened glass panel and elements of the mask are removed. We do this so that the areas we want to be etched are exposed and the areas we want to remain clear stay protected. The glass then passes through a specialized sandblasting chamber as a pressurized sand-like substance is fired across the glass. Once all of the panel has been sandblasted, the glass is quality checked and the mask is removed revealing the clear parts of the design. On single glazed pieces of glass, we then apply a protective coating to make cleaning easier. Double glazed units don’t need this protective coating as the etched face of the glass is protected within the sealed unit.

What to avoid when buying etched glass

Unfortunately, not all “Etched Glass” is created equal. This is because some companies say they sell “etched glass” when in fact they’re just applying stickers to glass to give it an “etched-effect”. In sunlight, these stickers can turn yellow and even shrink over the years resulting in a very poor finish. Keep in mind companies offering “etched glass effect” panels through screen-printing may also experience discoloration over time.

Our etched glass is created the right way, through sandblasting to ensure a high-quality, permanent finish. It’s important to always ensure you are purchasing a genuine sandblasted, quality etched glass product to avoid disappointment. You can see an example of the discoloration issue imitation etched glass suffers from here.

Your words

Our customers say

The four panels were so carefully packed and the dimensions were to the millimetre of our requirements. The result has absolutely transformed our hallway but has retained our lovely old door. Absolutely wonderful service. Great communication and advice. The product is real quality and will no doubt last for years. Thank you so much.

Michael G.

We have been so pleased with the lovely window created by Leadbitter Glass for our lounge door. We wanted a traditional etched pattern to reflect our Edwardian house. They perfectly matched our existing glass. The service was excellent: the company responded speedily to all our queries and shared draft designs with us to ensure we were happy with the final pane. Within days of agreeing the design, the window was dispatched to us and fitted our door perfectly.

Pip K.

We were absolutely delighted with all aspects of our dealings with Leadbitter Glass. We wanted a negative etched tree spreading across our front door and adjacent panels. With plenty of clear and precise advice from Leadbitter Glass we were able to make our own image work exactly as intended. The glass was produced on time, exactly as defined. We couldn't be happier with the result.

Phil K.

I had two etched glass panels made for our bathroom door with bespoke images. The glass was made exactly to our requirements. Excellent service and attention to detail. Kept fully up to date with progress and delivery date. I was concerned about delivery as we've received damaged goods from other suppliers in the past but I needn’t have worried as the glass came well packed. Really happy with the finished product. I would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Keith J.

Excellent customer service and product quality is first class. It was a pleasure doing business with Leadbitter Glass. Our order wasn't large by any means, but I still felt it was as important an order to them as it was to us.

Steve F.

Excellent service. Francis quickly developed my draft sketch into a finalised proposal for the etched glass panels for the new doors at our Church and made the etched glass panels within a matter of few days, enabling us to start the works as planned. The packaging of the glass panels was also superb to prevent possible damage in transit. Highly recommended.

Graham L.

Best result you could wish for. We are so pleased we found Leadbitter Glass which we did on an internet search. I had tried locally but no one seemed to have the expertise or vision that we hoped for. Superbly packed with communication about delivery and advise on unpacking. Project complete and we have just the best front door. A great experience.

Mary H.

I have just received my glass door panel and it is absolutely beautiful. This is the second piece of glass artwork I have ordered from Leadbitter Glass and both times the service, attention to detail, and just general helpfulness has been second to none. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
