Etched Glass
We’ve supplied homes in Maine with bespoke etched glass ever since we were first established in 1994. We create all of our glass to order so we can create glass to suit your home perfectly.
What designs do we offer?
Our etched glass main gallery has a wide range of designs, from elegant etched house names and numbers to traditional Victorian etched designs. A favorite among our clients in Maine is our Shadows of Nature range, where we capture the beauty of nature within etched glass panels. We also have a range of etched designs that have been inspired by designers Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright. These are just a few highlights from our etched glass main gallery, so whether you’re looking for something contemporary, traditional or maybe a little different, you’re sure to find the perfect glass for your Maine home.
We can even create new designs in addition to those offered on our website if you have your own artwork or images you would like us to use. This guide will help you understand what types of imagery are suitable for etching.

Proofing process
A proof of your selected design(s) in your custom sizes will be emailed to you, usually within 5 business days of placing an order. We do this as a standard practice to guarantee customer satisfaction with the finished panels.
Once we’ve sent you a proof, you can either approve it, and we’ll begin production, or request any design modifications. These modifications could include resizing certain elements or adding or removing certain features such as leaves or butterflies. We will only begin production once you have approved the final design.
Our decorative glass studio offers free delivery on almost all etched glass panels we supply to homes across Maine and the USA. We also manufacture and supply fused glass to Maine.

About Etched Glass
With origins dating back centuries, etched glass is one of the oldest forms of decorative glass. The manufacturing process has been refined through the years, with advancements allowing for more intricate designs. Today, etched glass is typically achieved by using an abrasive or acidic substance to etch a design onto a glass panel.
How do we etch glass?
The abrasive-blasting method, commonly referred to as sandblasting, is the technique we use when creating etched glass. We use this process for a variety of reasons:
- It ensures our etched glass finish is consistent and of the highest quality.
- It enables us to offer a wide variety of highly detailed designs and even completely bespoke designs to our clients.
- It allows more light to transmit through to the home than alternatives like acid etched glass.
- It avoids the health and safety issues associated with using hazardous acid to etch glass.
Our Process
To start, we create a custom mask that is then applied to the surface of the glass that will be etched. This mask covers the areas of the glass that we want to remain clear. The glass is then placed in a sandblasting chamber and bombarded with high-speed pressurized abrasive substance. Once the panel’s surface has been fully blasted, we remove the temporary mask, revealing the etched design. For single glazed glass, we apply a protective coating to the etched side of the panel to prevent fingerprints. Double glazed panels do not require this coating as the etched side of the panel is protected within the double glazed unit.
Perfection
Quality Redefined
What to avoid when buying etched glass
While some companies claim to offer “etched glass,” what they actually use are vinyl stickers with an etched-like appearance. These stickers can become discolored and shrink when exposed to sunlight, resulting in a yellowish appearance. Be aware that if a company claims to offer “etched glass effect” panels through screen-printing, they may also experience discoloration over time.
Our panels are made the right way by sandblasting them to ensure a high-quality, permanent etched finish. To avoid disappointment, it’s important to verify that you are purchasing a sandblasted, quality etched glass product. The issues that can arise with fake etched glass can be found here.
House Names and Numbers
Our Maine clients frequently choose etched glass house names and numbers for their transom windows, and it’s not difficult to understand why. The finish is excellent and it can quickly enhance the entryway of a property, adding a much desired touch of elegance. Our glass artists produce hundreds of these panels every year for customers globally.
Homes in the Maine area often have a glass panel above their doors known as a transom window, which can be the perfect location to display an etched house name or number. Head over to our house names and numbers gallery to find the ideal design to complement your home. If required, matching door or side panels that incorporate the same decorative border etc can also be produced.
Before we begin production, we will send you a preview of how the finished panel(s) will look with your chosen font and border (if applicable) to confirm that you are completely satisfied with your design choices.

Our customers say
The four panels were so carefully packed and the dimensions were to the millimetre of our requirements. The result has absolutely transformed our hallway but has retained our lovely old door. Absolutely wonderful service. Great communication and advice. The product is real quality and will no doubt last for years. Thank you so much.

We have been so pleased with the lovely window created by Leadbitter Glass for our lounge door. We wanted a traditional etched pattern to reflect our Edwardian house. They perfectly matched our existing glass. The service was excellent: the company responded speedily to all our queries and shared draft designs with us to ensure we were happy with the final pane. Within days of agreeing the design, the window was dispatched to us and fitted our door perfectly.
Pip K.
We were absolutely delighted with all aspects of our dealings with Leadbitter Glass. We wanted a negative etched tree spreading across our front door and adjacent panels. With plenty of clear and precise advice from Leadbitter Glass we were able to make our own image work exactly as intended. The glass was produced on time, exactly as defined. We couldn't be happier with the result.

I had two etched glass panels made for our bathroom door with bespoke images. The glass was made exactly to our requirements. Excellent service and attention to detail. Kept fully up to date with progress and delivery date. I was concerned about delivery as we've received damaged goods from other suppliers in the past but I needn’t have worried as the glass came well packed. Really happy with the finished product. I would definitely recommend to friends and family.
Keith J.
Excellent customer service and product quality is first class. It was a pleasure doing business with Leadbitter Glass. Our order wasn't large by any means, but I still felt it was as important an order to them as it was to us.

Excellent service. Francis quickly developed my draft sketch into a finalised proposal for the etched glass panels for the new doors at our Church and made the etched glass panels within a matter of few days, enabling us to start the works as planned. The packaging of the glass panels was also superb to prevent possible damage in transit. Highly recommended.

Best result you could wish for. We are so pleased we found Leadbitter Glass which we did on an internet search. I had tried locally but no one seemed to have the expertise or vision that we hoped for. Superbly packed with communication about delivery and advise on unpacking. Project complete and we have just the best front door. A great experience.

I have just received my glass door panel and it is absolutely beautiful. This is the second piece of glass artwork I have ordered from Leadbitter Glass and both times the service, attention to detail, and just general helpfulness has been second to none. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
