Proofing process

We always create a proof showing your chosen design in your custom sizes after an order is placed. You will receive this via email usually within 5 business days of placing an order. We do this regardless of whether you request a proof or not because we want to ensure all customer receive their perfect etched glass.

After reviewing your proof, you can either approve it and we’ll begin production, or you can request amendments. This might be resizing some elements, changing a font, or swapping some colours. Only when you’re 100% happy with the design and you give us your approval will we begin production.

About Etched Glass

With origins dating back to the 15th century, etched glass is one of the oldest forms of decorative glass. As technology has advanced, so too has the manufacturing process and the creative possibilities, likely contributing to its growing popularity in recent years. Today, etched glass is typically achieved by applying an abrasive or acidic substance to etch a design onto a glass panel.

How do we etch glass?

Abrasive-blasting, also known as sandblasting, is the technique we use when creating etched glass. This technique is chosen for a variety of reasons:

  • It ensures our etched glass finish is consistent and of the highest quality.
  • It enables us to offer a wide variety of highly detailed designs and even bespoke designs to our clients.
  • It allows light to transmit through better than alternatives like acid etched glass.
  • It avoids the health and safety issues associated with using hazardous acid to etch glass.

Our Process

We start by making a custom mask, which is then placed on the surface of the glass that will be etched. This protects the areas of the glass that we don’t want to be etched. Then, the glass is put into a sandblasting chamber and bombarded with a high-speed pressurized abrasive substance. When the panel’s surface has been fully etched, we remove the temporary mask which reveals the un-etched, clear sections of the design. For single glazed glass, a protective sandblast coating is applied to the etched side of the panel to prevent fingerprints becoming ingrained. On double glazed panels, the protective coating isn’t required as the etched side of the panel is contained within the double glazed unit.

Perfection

Quality Redefined

What to avoid when buying etched glass

Many companies advertise “etched glass,” but they actually use vinyl stickers with an etched-like appearance, not true etching. These stickers can deteriorate and change color when exposed to sunlight, resulting in a yellowish appearance. Additionally, if a company offers “etched glass effect” panels through screen-printing, be aware that they may also experience discoloration over time.

We produce our panels correctly, by sandblasting them to attain a high-quality, permanent etched finish. You should always ensure you are paying for a quality sandblasted etched glass product to avoid disappointment. You can see the issues people run into with fake etched glass here.

House Names and Numbers

Etched glass house names and numbers are a popular choice among our Connecticut clients for transom windows, and it’s easy to see why. The finish is superb and it can easily transform the entryway of a property, adding a highly sought-after aura of elegance. Our glass artists create hundreds of these panels annually for customers around the world.

Many homes in the Connecticut area feature a glass panel above their doors, known as a transom window, which can be the perfect location to showcase an etched house name or number. Our collection of house names and numbers can be browsed to find the ideal design to complement your home. Additionally, matching door or side panels can also be created upon request.

Again, when you place your order, we will send you a proof of how the finished panel(s) will look with your chosen font and border (if applicable) to make sure you’re 100% happy with your design choices.

Your words

Our customers say

The four panels were so carefully packed and the dimensions were to the millimetre of our requirements. The result has absolutely transformed our hallway but has retained our lovely old door. Absolutely wonderful service. Great communication and advice. The product is real quality and will no doubt last for years. Thank you so much.

Michael G.

We have been so pleased with the lovely window created by Leadbitter Glass for our lounge door. We wanted a traditional etched pattern to reflect our Edwardian house. They perfectly matched our existing glass. The service was excellent: the company responded speedily to all our queries and shared draft designs with us to ensure we were happy with the final pane. Within days of agreeing the design, the window was dispatched to us and fitted our door perfectly.

Pip K.

We were absolutely delighted with all aspects of our dealings with Leadbitter Glass. We wanted a negative etched tree spreading across our front door and adjacent panels. With plenty of clear and precise advice from Leadbitter Glass we were able to make our own image work exactly as intended. The glass was produced on time, exactly as defined. We couldn't be happier with the result.

Phil K.

I had two etched glass panels made for our bathroom door with bespoke images. The glass was made exactly to our requirements. Excellent service and attention to detail. Kept fully up to date with progress and delivery date. I was concerned about delivery as we've received damaged goods from other suppliers in the past but I needn’t have worried as the glass came well packed. Really happy with the finished product. I would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Keith J.

Excellent customer service and product quality is first class. It was a pleasure doing business with Leadbitter Glass. Our order wasn't large by any means, but I still felt it was as important an order to them as it was to us.

Steve F.

Excellent service. Francis quickly developed my draft sketch into a finalised proposal for the etched glass panels for the new doors at our Church and made the etched glass panels within a matter of few days, enabling us to start the works as planned. The packaging of the glass panels was also superb to prevent possible damage in transit. Highly recommended.

Graham L.

Best result you could wish for. We are so pleased we found Leadbitter Glass which we did on an internet search. I had tried locally but no one seemed to have the expertise or vision that we hoped for. Superbly packed with communication about delivery and advise on unpacking. Project complete and we have just the best front door. A great experience.

Mary H.

I have just received my glass door panel and it is absolutely beautiful. This is the second piece of glass artwork I have ordered from Leadbitter Glass and both times the service, attention to detail, and just general helpfulness has been second to none. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
